Water Scarcity Threatens Rural Farmers in Northwest Bangladesh

Drought between Spain and Portugal

A serious groundwater crisis is affecting thousands of rural farmers in the Barind region of northwest Bangladesh. For several decades, local agricultural workers used deep tube wells to pump water from underground to grow crops year-round. However, a recent study shows that more than eighty percent of this dry region currently faces extreme water stress. Underground water levels are dropping rapidly due to changing weather patterns, unpredictable rainfall, and decades of heavy extraction. As a result, many local wells are completely running dry during the hot seasons.

The shrinking water supply creates major financial challenges and food shortages for families who depend entirely on agriculture. To save the remaining groundwater, environmental organizations are now training thousands of local workers to use water-efficient farming methods and plant different crops. Highlighting the severity of the situation, a local farmer named Mohammad Asif stated, "Sometimes, I fear the struggle for water will become so brutal that people will go to war over it." Experts advise communities to harvest more rainwater in large ponds to protect their future harvests.
